How to Change Your tModLoader Version

Before You Start

Changing your tModLoader version requires a reinstall. Back up your world files and mod configurations before proceeding.

1. Go to the Backups tab in your game panel and create a backup
2. Alternatively, download your world files from the Files tab to your local computer

Step 1: Change the tModLoader Version

1. Go to your server in the Game Panel
2. Go to the Startup tab
3. Find the tModLoader version variable
4. Change it to the version you want (e.g., v2024.09.3.0)

Step 2: Delete Server Files

1. Go to the Files tab
2. Select all files and delete them — the server directory must be empty for the new version to install cleanly

Why delete everything? tModLoader version files are not interchangeable. Old version files will conflict with the new version and prevent the server from starting.

Step 3: Reinstall

1. Go to the Settings tab
2. Click Reinstall Server
3. Confirm the reinstall — this will download and set up the correct tModLoader version based on what you selected in Step 1

Step 4: Start and Verify

1. Start your server
2. Check the Console tab to confirm the server starts without errors on the new version
3. Re-upload your world files if you backed them up earlier

Important Notes

• Mod compatibility: Mods built for one tModLoader version may not work on a different version. After changing versions, verify all your mods are compatible
• tModLoader 1.4.3 vs 1.4.4: These are major version branches with different mod ecosystems. Mods for 1.4.3 do not work on 1.4.4 and vice versa. Make sure your mods match the branch you are using
• Legacy tModLoader (1.3.x): If you need mods that only support Terraria 1.3, you must use the legacy tModLoader branch — these mods are completely incompatible with 1.4.x
• Invalid version string: If the server fails to start after changing versions, double-check the version format in the Startup tab. The format must match an actual release (check tModLoader releases on GitHub)
